STAY CONNCECTED DURING A CRISIS WITH FACEBOOK’S SAFETY CHECK

During a critical incident, it can be hours or days before we can be reunited with our love ones, so when disaster or the unthinkable happens Facebook created Safety Check. Safety Check is an easy to use tool that will let your loved one’s know that you are safe. The tool allows you to let friends and family know you are safe, check on others in the affected area and mark your friends as safe.

As of November 2016, Facebook said that the community instead of Facebook could turn on Safety Check. Once an incident occurs, a third party source alerts FB, then the incident is automatically titled in line with the third party alert. The people in the area talking about the incident will be invited to mark themselves as safe, and invite others to do the same.

When you receive a notification from Facebook asking if you are safe, click I’m safe. To find out if someone else is safe during a critical incident, go to Safety Check and you will see a list of friend who are marked safe and a list of friends who are not marked safe yet. You can also search by name, keep in mind that you can only ask people you are friends with on Facebook. Once you ask, they will receive a notification and can then mark themselves as safe.
